The faculty members and the students of the Department of English, University of Asia Pacific met the renowned Bangladeshi writer, critic and former Professor of the University of Dhaka, Dr. Syed Manzoorul Islam at the event “Meet the Author” on January 9, 2019. It was a rare privilege to have SMI (as he is known to his students) at UAP surrounded by students of the English Department and literary Club. The programme was held at the jury space of the Department of Architecture, UAP. The session gave the audience direct access to Dr. Syed Manzoorul Islam who shared his personal stories, offered some writing tips, and encouraged the students to “keep reading, keep writing and keep listening.”
Dr. Islam advised the budding writers on how to start working on a storyline before creating an entire story. He also put emphasis on the uniqueness of language in the writing process. In case of figuring out how to end a story, Dr.Manzoorul Islam emphasized the open-ended process so that readers are left to resolve the situation with their imagination. He motivated everyone to keep reading, listening and watching as much as they could. At the end of the programme there was a lively question/answer session. Students eagerly asked Professor Islam about his own experience as an author and questioned him also about characters and incidents in his stories. The programme ended with a photo session of the resource person with students and the faculty members.
